USB 3.0 benchmark and Guide (11/08/2010 Tim )
USB 3.0 is here! How much faster is it? Is it Compatible with USB 2.0? What do I need to buy? Click here to read the Netplus guide to USB 3.0!
How fast is USB 3.0?
- We tested some drives in a Vantec USB 3.0 External HDD Dock connected via the USB3 ports on a GA-X58A-UD3R mainboard.
- The result showed USB 2.0 capping out at 20mb/s, where as USB 3.0 was about 4 times as fast at almost 80mb/s, not much slower than when directly connected via SATA.
Is it compatible with USB 2.0?
- In most cases yes, you can mix and match USB 3.0 and 2.0. However unless all devices and cables are USB 3.0 you'll only get USB 2.0 speeds.
How do I tell if something supports USB 3.0?
- USB 3.0 devices are characterised by their blue colour. Even USB 3.0 ports will be blue inside if you get a closer look.
Will my computer support USB 3.0?
- Have a look on the back of your computer to see if any of the USB ports are Blue coloured. These should be USB 3.0
- If buying a new computer, ask for one with USB 3.0. Many of the mainboards we sell now come with USB 3.0 (typically 2 ports on the back) View our USB 3.0 mainboards here!
- If you already have a computer you can add a USB 3.0 PCI-E expansion card. (Or an ExpressCard for your laptop)
What about SATA3? Do I need that to use USB 3.0?
- No. SATA3 and USB3 are very different. Even an old SATA1 drive will far exceed the limits of USB2.0
